Text | This armchair model can be made into a sofa using a 3x4 format sheet.
Sofa 1. Hold the sheet in a horizontal position. Mark the medians. 2. Create a valley fold by bringing the top edge over the bottom edge from top to bottom. Mark the fold. Unfold. 3. Create a valley fold by bringing the right edge to the left edge from right to left. Mark the fold. Unfold. Prepare the contours of the couch 4. Create a valley fold by bringing the top edge over the bottom edge. 5. Create a valley fold by bringing the bottom edge of the front flap up to the top edge (hinge fold). 6. Flip the fold from right to left. 7. Create a valley fold by bringing the bottom edge of the front flap up to the top edge (hinge fold). We have a horizontal accordion with 4 flaps. At the top, we find a simple edge hiding a hinge edge itself hiding a new simple edge. At the bottom, there are two double-thick flaps. 8. Create a valley fold by bringing the top edge of the front flap up and down to the bottom edge (hinge fold). Mark the fold. Unfold. 9. Create a valley fold by bringing the bottom hinge edge of the front flap up and down to the top edge (fold through two layers). Mark the fold. Unfold. You must be careful that the front flap remains in place during this fold. 10. Unfold the flaps to return to the initial sheet. The sheet has a vertical middle fold and 5 horizontal folds. These folds can be either valley or mountain. 11. Turn the sheet so that the upper half, delimited by a central horizontal fold, has only one horizontal fold located a quarter of the way up, while the lower part has 3 horizontal folds spaced an eighth of the way up. 12. Fold the bottom edge of the sheet upwards with a valley fold, using the first horizontal fold from the bottom. The bottom of the sheet is now formed by a hinge fold which brings together a large rear flap and a small rectangular front flap of 1/8th height. 13. Fold the bottom edge of the sheet up and down using a valley fold located exactly on the top edge of the small flap. The bottom of the sheet supports now a horizontal flap one 1/8th height, double thickness. The top edge of this flap is a hinge edge. 14. Taking the right corner of th small flap, processing up and down towads the left, create an oblique valley fold passing through the middle of the small flap and through the lower right corner of the small flap. Mark well. You obtain a right triangle with two trapped vertices. The free corner protrudes below the bottom edge of the fold. 15. Taking the left corner of the small flap, processing up and down towads the right, create an oblique valley fold passing through the middle of the small flap and through the lower left corner of the small flap. Mark well. You obtain a right triangle with two trapped vertices. The free corner protrudes below the bottom edge of the fold. The top of the small flap is now a pointed one. 16. Using a horizontal fold passing above the point, fold the small flap upwards then downwards. You once again find a rectangular flap topped with two small triangles protruding above on the right and on the left. 17. Using the existing horizontal crease below the top of the sheet, bring the top edge toward the edge of the top hinge crease of the small flap. The single thickness uper edge is now along the thick upper edge of the small bottom flap. Both triangles are hidden. 18. Flip the fold from right to left. 19. Bring the lower right corner of the fold to the upper hinge edge with a 45° fold. This fold passes through the upper right corner of the fold. A triangle with a complex structure (a kind of vertical strip, from which protrudes a small free triangle lying on a thickness 3 triangle) is formed. At the rear, on the right, protrudes a triangle of thickness 1 which belongs to a rectangular flap of single thickness. 20. Bring the lower left corner of the fold to the upper hinge edge with a 45° fold. This fold passes through the upper left corner of the fold. You obtain a complex shape, vertically symmetrical, upon a rectangular single thickness flap. Analyzing this shape, you will find, from left to right: a - you find a vertical side of single thickness. b - you then find an oblique hinge fold of double thickness. c - you then find a free triangle of double thickness. d - you then find a strip corresponding to a vertical trapezoid of thickness. e - after the right edge of this trapezoid, you find a large surface which stops on a hinge edge. f - you then find, symmetrically arranged in reverse order, the elements that you have reviewed. Note that the kind of flap from a-(single left edge) to d-(thick vertical hinge edge) forms a square. On the left, the vertical border is free. On the right, the vertical border is delimited by the thick vertical border of the d-trapezoid. 21. Create a 45° oblique fold by moving the upper right corner of the shape down to the end of the vertical border of the inner right trapezoid. You will have to fold the small triangle which protrudes under the thick border. Mark the fold. The top border of the square comes along the right side of the double thickness right trapezoid. 22. Create a 45° oblique fold by moving the upper left corner of the shape down to the end of the vertical border of the inner left trapezoid. You will have to fold the small triangle which protrudes under the thick border. Mark the fold. The top border of the square comes along the left side of the double thickness left trapezoid. 23. Flip the fold from right to left. We now have a shape made up of a large trapezoid with the short side at the top. This large trapezoid forms a pocket. At the bottom of the shape is a smaller, very thick trapezoid, the long side of which is on the long side of the upper trapezoid. 24. Open the upper trapezius by pushing its central part backwards until it is vertical. The triangular parts also straighten out, and form two walls to the left and right of the central wall. Two very thick triangular flaps are formed inside the 3D zone, each leaning against one of the short vertical sides. 25. Fold the upper side of the left vertical wall into a valley at 45° from left to right, leaning on the side of the internal triangular point. 26. Fold the upper side of the right vertical wall into a valley at 4° from right to left, leaning on the side of the internal triangular point. 27. Bring the rear vertical wall forward to lay it flat. Two additional folds form along the inner sides of the hidden thick triangles. The shape obtained resembles a rectangle in a horizontal position provided on each side with a triangular point. 28. Create a horizontal valley fold by bringing the bottom side of the 6-sided shape from front to back on the top side. Mark the fold. Unfold. 29. Reverse the direction of the fold you have just made, as if you wanted to slide the end under the flap. At the same time, rock backwards to return to the vertical position. We have just finished the seat and back part of the sofa. 30. Flip the fold from right to left. 31. Straighten the thick strip that borders the rectangular shape vertically, starting from the center. Two sides are formed during this operation. 32. Pinch all the edges bordering the sofa well, so that the folds hold well The sofa is finished. All that's left to do is sit on it. Armchair 1. Hold the sheet in a horizontal position. 2. Create a valley fold by bringing the right edge to the left edge from right to left. You should not mark the folds too much as they could be reversed during folding. 3. Create a valley fold by bringing the left edge of the front flap from left to right to the right edge (hinge fold). We now have a front flap of simple thickness which represents a quarter of the surface of the initial square. This flap is connected to the rest of the fold by a vertical hinge fold located to its left. 4. Remove the front flap by cutting it along the hinge crease. We now have a rectangular rear flap connected to a half-sized rectangular flap by a vertical hinge fold located on the right. 5. Unfold the front flap to lay the sheet flat. We have a vertical rectangle of proportion 3x4. The vertical fold that appears is no longer of interest. You have to smooth it out as much as possible to make it disappear. 6. Begin the folding procedure at step 1 of the sofa. The result is an armchair that harmonizes perfectly with the sofa. |
