Four Petal Flower 2

Author Traditional

Difficulty ***
Format square
Base bird
Text This folding produces a flower with four long petals. It requires using a very particular technique, the open sink fold.

Flower

1. Start with a bird base. Hold it with the closed tip upwards.

2. Raise the front flap as much as possible, forming a valley fold.

3. Flip the fold from right to left.

4. Raise the front flap as much as possible, forming a valley fold.
We now have a vertical elongated diamond shape with two points facing down.

5. Locate the point of intersection between the horizontal imaginary line which joins the left and right middle vertices of the diamond and the vertical axis.

6. Form a valley fold by bringing the right middle vertex of the right front triangular flap from right to left to the intersection point. Mark the fold well.

7. Return the previous fold to the mountain, then to the valley, several times. Leave the flap unfolded.

8. Form a valley fold by bringing the middle left vertex of the left front triangular flap from left to right to the intersection point. Mark the fold well.

9. Return the previous fold to the mountain, then to the valley, several times. Leave the flap unfolded.

10. Flip the fold from right to left.

11. Form a valley fold by bringing the right middle vertex of the right front triangular flap from right to left to the intersection point. Mark the fold well.

12. Return the previous fold to the mountain, then to the valley, several times. Leave the flap unfolded.

13. Form a valley fold by bringing the middle left vertex of the left front triangular flap from left to right to the intersection point. Mark the fold well.

14. Return the previous fold to the mountain, then to the valley, several times. Leave the flap unfolded.
We have a 4-sided shape, with an upper point formed by two free flaps and two tapered lower points facing each other.
Make four pressed pleats.

15. Slide a finger from left to right inside the right vertical flap at the height of the middle of the flap and pull back to open it.
The right apex which is at the height of the flap transforms into a blunt three-dimensional point on which 3 mountain folds arrive. These three folds will be transformed into valley folds in order to tuck the tip inside the fold.

16. Press on the tip to make it fit inside the fold. A sort of triangle formed by mountain folds is taking shape. Gradually pinch these mountain folds in order to completely tuck the tip inside.
The flap that we opened closes. The starting peak has given way to a vertical edge. The top of the flap folds freely around a horizontal crease.

17. Repeat step 15 and step 16 by applying them to the other three parts.
We now have a 6-sided shape, with an upper point formed by two free flaps and two tapered lower points facing each other.

Prepare the petals

18. Form a valley fold by bringing the upper peak of the front flap over the lower peak from top to bottom.

19. Flip the fold from right to left.

20. Form a valley fold by bringing the upper peak of the front flap over the lower peak from top to bottom.
We now have a closed point at the top on which four flaps arrive.

21. Refine the left flap of the upper tip by making a valley fold from left to right passing through the top of the tip and the point of intersection between the left side of the flap and the horizontal fold line around which the flap pivots lower.

22. Refine the right flap of the upper tip by making a valley fold from right to left passing through the top of the tip and the point of intersection between the right side of the flap and the horizontal fold line around which the flap pivots lower.

23. Flip the fold from right to left.

24. Repeat steps 21 and steps 22 by applying them to the upper point flaps.
The closed tip is now thinner. It will serve as a tail for the flower.

25. Form the petals by flattening the 4 flaps perpendicular to the stem.

26. Shape the four petals by bending them slightly.
The flower is finished. It has a small tail that allows it to be slipped onto the stem of the 'Stem and Leaf' folding that follows.

Stem and leaf

This folding creates a stem with a leaf at its upper end. It is possible to slip a flower into a pocket created at the height of the leaf.

1. Start with one base of the diamond. Arrange it horizontally, the two upper small triangles towards the left.

2. Locate the horizontal center line.

3. Form a valley fold by bringing the lower left edge of the diamond to the midline.
Pay close attention to the different thicknesses, so that they stay in place.

4. Turn the fold over with a movement from back to front and from bottom to top.

5. Straighten the rear flap vertically with a valley fold resting on the horizontal median fold, to clearly identify it.

6. Form a valley fold by bringing the bottom left side of the shape over the middle fold from the bottom to the top. Carefully monitor the installation of the different thicknesses.

7. Fold in the mountain, leaning on the middle fold, so as to close the fold.
We obtain a very thin triangular shape, with a long point on the left. This will be the stem.

8. Use your left thumb to locate the top of the front triangle which opens slightly forward. Go slightly past this peak to the right along the upper edge. Fold the right point into a valley using the left thumb which retains the point marked in the previous step. The tip should come along the top horizontal edge. Mark the fold well.

9. Straighten the tip that has just been bent vertically using a movement from left to right. Insert your right thumb inside, as far down as possible, spreading the edges. Push the tip forward, gradually removing your thumb and flattening the folds that form.
We now have a stem and a leaf. The top of the stem has a small pocket which is just waiting for the tail of the flower to be slipped inside.
