Garland

Text The garland is made up of the interweaving of a series of links. Each link requires two identical rectangular sheets, 2:1 format.

Preparation of material for a link

1. Take a square sheet of paper, hold it in a horizontal position.

2. Form a valley fold by bringing the right edge to the left edge from right to left. Strongly mark the fold.

3. Cut along the hinge fold, resulting in two rectangles with a 1x2 ratio.
It is not obligatory to use square paper. Rectangular sheets cut lengthwise can also do the trick. It's just a question of proportions.

Making a link

1. Take a rectangle in a horizontal position.

2. Form a valley fold by bringing the bottom edge up to the top edge. Mark the fold well.
We have a horizontal rectangular shape composed of two flaps linked by a lower horizontal hinge edge.

3. Form a valley fold by bringing the top edge of the front flap up and down over the bottom hinge edge. Mark the fold well.

4. Flip the fold from right to left.

5. Form a valley fold by bringing the top edge of the front flap up and down over the bottom hinge edge. Mark the fold well.

6. Open the fold along the hinge edge. Place it in a horizontal position, with the two adjacent flaps facing upwards.
We have a horizontal rectangular shape composed of a rear flap carrying two identical front rectangular flaps, one upper linked by an upper hinge edge to the rear flap, the other lower linked by a lower hinge edge to the rear flap.

7. Flip the folding from right to left, to put the two small flaps at the back.

8. Form a valley fold by bringing the right edge to the left edge from right to left. Do not mark the fold too much.
We have a rectangular shape carrying two flaps linked by a vertical hinge edge located on the right.

9. Form a valley fold by bringing the left edge of the front flap from left to right over the hinge fold on the right. Mark the fold well.

10. Flip the fold from right to left.

11. Form a valley fold by bringing the right edge of the front flap from right to left over the hinge fold on the left. Mark the fold well.
We now have a kind of accordion with 4 flaps, equipped with two hinged folds on the right and a left hinged fold placed between two free flaps.

12. Open the fold by rotating the lower flap from right to left around the left interior hinge fold.
We now have a rectangular shape with two flaps on the back surface. These two flaps are joined to the right and left edges of the model.

13. Flip the fold from right to left.

14. Form a valley fold by bringing the top edge down to the bottom edge.
We have a horizontal rectangular shape, composed of two interior flaps linked by an upper hinge edge. These interior flaps are hidden by a left and a right flap, identical, straddling the hinge fold, linked to the internal flaps by left and right vertical hinge folds.

15. Form a valley fold by bringing the lower left corner of the front flap at 45¡ from bottom to top on the upper hinge fold. Align the left edge which swings to the top edge. Mark the fold, unfold.

16. Form a valley fold by bringing the lower right corner of the front flap to the top hinge fold at 45¡ from bottom to top. Align the right edge that swings to the top edge. Mark the fold, unfold.
The same series of folds will be made on the back flap.

17. Flip the fold from right to left.

18. Form a valley fold by bringing the lower left corner of the front flap to the top hinge fold at 45¡ from bottom to top. Align the left edge which swings to the top edge. Mark the fold, unfold.

19. Form a valley fold by bringing the lower right corner of the front flap to the top hinge fold at 45¡ from bottom to top. Align the right edge that swings to the top edge. Mark the fold, unfold.
Reminder: the horizontal rectangular shape carries two flaps on the right and left straddling the upper hinge edge. We're going to put them vertically.

20. Slightly peel off the lower right top of the right front flap and the similar top located at the rear.

21. Gently grasp the upper right corner of the small left flap and pull gently upwards and to the left.
The straddling flap unfolds and swings into vertical position around the 45¡ folds made in the previous steps. Mark the folds.
We repeat the same operations on the right straddling flap.

22. Slightly peel off the lower left top of the front flap and the similar top located at the rear.

23. Gently grasp the upper left apex and gently pull up and to the right. The saddle flap unfolds and swings into a vertical position around the 45¡ folds made in the previous steps. Mark the folds well.
We have just folded a half-link, which looks like a kind of horseshoe with two branches facing upwards.

24. Repeat the operations on the second rectangle to form the second half-link.
The two branches of a half-link have the same structure. They form a kind of V-shaped gutter whose edges are made up of double-thickness flaps. These flaps form pockets along the gutter, with an opening at the end of it. To make a link, you will have to slide the branches of a half-link inside the pockets of the other half-link.

25. By placing the fat of the left thumb inside the upper branch by half a link, open it as much as possible (without unfolding everything) and slightly peel off the flaps to partially open the pockets.

26. By placing the fat of the right thumb inside the upper branch of the other half-link, open it as much as possible (without unfolding everything) without removing the internal flaps.

27. Gently slide the upper branch of the right half-link into the upper pockets of the left half-link. Push as far as possible to properly engage the two branches one into the other.
This is probably the most difficult part of folding. You must not force too much and be patient.

28. Repeat all operations to interlock the lower branches of the two half-links.
We obtain a square-shaped link. Mark all the folds well by giving them a slight twisting movement, in order to lock the two branches one inside the other.

Making a garland

1. Prepare as many links as you want, without closing them completely, except the first.

2. To form the garland, simply nest the links into each other, closing each link once its place in the chain has been found.
