Aveuglami project - folding sheet

Simple Box

Author unknown
Category box
Difficulty *
Format square, two-tone
Base preliminary
Text This box initially uses the same technique as the Placecard or Basket 1. A very small modification allows a lid to also be folded.

a-Box body

1. Fold a preliminary base. Hold it closed tip at the bottom.

2. Create a valley fold by bringing the top tip of the front flap up and down over the closed tip. Mark the fold well.
Be careful of the junctions with the two left and right corners. A hinge fold connects these two corners.

3. Locate the middle of the fold connecting the left and right middle corners.
It is located at the junction of the horizontal hinge edge that we have just created and the vertical axis materialized by the interval separating the two upper front points.

4. Create a valley fold by bringing the lower point of the front flap from bottom to top on the midpoint that you have just identified. Mark the fold clearly, which must be perfectly parallel to the middle hinge fold.
We have just created a small triangular flap with a vertex facing up. This triangular flap is carried by a trapezoidal flap (four sides) whose upper edge is the horizontal hinge fold.

5. Rotate the trapezoidal flap up and down around the horizontal hinge edge to bring it to the two upper points.
The triangular flap must remain glued to the trapezoidal flap.

6. Continue to rotate the trapezoidal flap from top to bottom to slide it between the lower fixed triangle before folding and the two upper points.
The triangular flap must remain stuck to the trapezoidal flap and will be trapped behind it. To facilitate movement, you must slightly open the folding, pulling the hinge edge towards yourself. The operations of steps 5 and 6 amount to reversing the horizontal hinge fold which, from a valley at the start, transforms into a mountain fold.

7. Flip the fold from right to left.
We find a large front flap, with a free point at the top, to which we will apply the operations from step 2 to step 6.

8. Create a valley fold by bringing the top tip of the front flap up and down over the closed tip. Mark the fold well.
Be careful of the junctions with the two left and right corners. A hinge fold connects these two corners.

9. Locate the middle of the fold connecting the left and right middle corners.
It is located at the junction of the horizontal hinge edge that we have just created and the vertical axis materialized by the interval separating the two upper front points.

11. Rotate the trapezoidal flap from bottom to top around the horizontal hinge edge to bring it onto the two upper points.
The triangular flap must remain stuck to the trapezoidal flap.

12. Continue to rotate the trapezoidal flap from top to bottom to slide it between the lower front fixed triangle of the folding and the two upper points.
The triangular flap must remain stuck to the trapezoidal flap and will be trapped behin it. To facilitate movement, you must slightly open the folding, pulling the hinge edge towards you. The operations of step 11 and step 12 amount to reversing the horizontal hinge fold which, from a valley at the start, transforms into a mountain fold.

13. Locate the middle of the line that connects the two left and right middle corners.
It is located at the junction of the horizontal hinge edge and the vertical axis materialized by the interval separating the two upper front points.

14. Create a valley fold by bringing the right middle corner from right to left to the midpoint that you have just identified. Mark the fold well.

15. Create a valley fold by bringing the middle left corner from left to right to the midpoint. Mark the fold well.
Just bring it exactly opposite the corner that you folded in the previous step.

16. Unfold the two flaps that you have just created, to return them to their initial position.
We are going to reverse the left and right corners so that they fit into the fold.

17. Open the fold by sliding a finger of the left hand between the front edge and the upper right point.

18. With one finger of your right hand, push from right to left on the right front tip until it slips between the front edge and the upper right tip. Close the fold by clearly marking the folds.
Care must be taken to reuse the preparatory folds made in step 14.

19. Open the fold by sliding a finger of the right hand between the front edge and the upper left point.

20. With one finger of your left hand, push from left to right on the left front tip until it slides between the front edge and the top left tip. Close the fold by clearly marking the folds.
Care must be taken to reuse the preparatory folds made in step 15.

21. Flip the fold from right to left.
We will restart the operations from step 13 to step 20.

22. Locate the middle of the line which connects the two left and right middle corners.
It is located at the junction of the horizontal hinge edge and the vertical axis materialized by the interval separating the two upper front points.

23. Create a valley fold by bringing the right middle corner from right to left to the midpoint that you have just identified. Mark the fold well.

24. Create a valley fold by bringing the middle left corner from left to right to the midpoint. Mark the fold well.
Just bring it exactly opposite the corner that you folded in the previous step.

25. Unfold the two flaps that you have just created, to return them to their initial position.
We are going to reverse the left and right corners so that they fit into the fold.

26. Open the fold by sliding a finger of the left hand between the front edge and the upper right point.

27. With one finger of the right hand, push from right to left on the right front point until it slips between the front edge and the upper right point. Close the fold by clearly marking the folds.
Care must be taken to reuse the preparatory folds made in step 23.

28. Open the fold by sliding a finger of the right hand between the front edge and the upper left point.

29. With one finger of your left hand, push from left to right on the left front point until it slips between the front edge and the upper left point. Close the fold by clearly marking the folds.
We now have a 6-sided shape, composed of a closed lower point connected by two vertical sides to an upper point formed by two points separated by a vertical interval.

30. Locate the horizontal line that joins the left and right corners of the lower tip.

31. Bring the bottom tip upward, creating a valley fold connecting the left and right corners of the bottom tip. Unfold and change the valley fold to a mountain fold. Repeat several times. Return to the initial position.

32. Rotate the right front flap around the vertical axis to bring it onto the left front flap.

33. Flip the fold from right to left.

34. Rotate the right front flap around the vertical axis to bring it onto the left front flap.
We now have a 6-sided shape comprising, towards the bottom, a closed point and, towards the top, a free point hiding another identical free point. The two upper points are connected by a series of accordion folds which result from all the operations that have just been carried out.

35. Create a valley fold by bringing the top tip down from the top to the bottom tip.
The valley fold should form at the height of the accordion folds. We obtain a horizontal hinge fold.

36. Locate the middle of the hinge fold that you have just created.

37. Create a valley fold by bringing the lower point of the front flap from the bottom to the top on the midpoint that you have just identified.
We obtain a rectangular flap carrying a small triangular flap at the front.

38. Flip the fold from right to left.

39. Create a valley fold by bringing the upper tip forward to the lower tip from top to bottom.
The valley fold should form at the height of the accordion folds. We obtain a horizontal hinge fold.

40. Locate the middle of the hinge fold that you have just created.

41. Create a valley fold by bringing the lower point of the front flap from the bottom to the top on the midpoint that you have just identified.
We obtain a rectangular flap carrying a small triangular flap at the front. In the end, we have a 5-sided shape, with a closed tip facing down and the top half-opening.

42. Place the shape perpendicular to you.

43. Inserting fingers into the shape, pinch the left edge between the left thumb and middle finger and the right edge between the right thumb and middle finger. Place the left index finger on the front edge, so as to block it.

44. Gently pull left and right to open the fold. The bottom goes up, to align with the folds that we prepared in step 31.
You can help the bottom to rise by pressing on the lower point, without letting go of the rest of the fold. It's not easy unless you have a third hand. We now have a three-dimensional folding in the shape of a box equipped on the left and right with rectangular flaps carrying a small triangular flap. These rectangular flaps are connected to the box by mountain folds, which we will reverse.

45. Rotate the left flap from left to right around the hinge fold until it is pressed against the left interior wall of the box.

46. Rotate the right flap from right to left around the hinge fold until it is pressed against the right interior wall of the box.
The simple box is finished. To keep the flaps on the walls, simply fill it with gifts. Those around you will appreciate it!

b-Lid

The construction of a lid is very simple. We use exactly the same sequence of folds, with two modifications in the way of proceeding:
1. During step a-14, step a-15, step a-23, and step a-24, instead of folding the corners to the midpoint, we stop a few millimeters from this point. The bottom will widen accordingly.

2. step a-37 and step a-41 must be modified, so that the height of the rectangular flap remains equal to the height of the edge. You have to fold the triangular tip at least once more to achieve this effect.
We obtain a box whose width is a little larger than the previous box. Just use it as a lid.

c-Two-tone variant

You can use two-tone paper. The folding technique that we have just followed then gives a box entirely of the color that was underneath when the folding started (main color), except for the interior background which is the other color (secondary color). You can modify the distribution of colors by replacing a-step 5 and a-step 6 of the body of the box with the following instructions:
1. Replace a-step 5 by: Return the triangular tip to its initial position.

2. Replace a-step 6 with: Continue to rotate the triangular tip to slide it under the trapezoidal flap.
The triangular flap will be trapped behind the trapezoidal flap. The operations of step 1 and step 2 of this variant amount to reversing the horizontal hinge fold of the triangular point which, from a valley at the start, transforms into a mountain fold.

3. Replace a-step 11 and a-step 12 of the box body with step 1 and step 2 of the variant. The main color is now distributed along a band formed by one side of the box, the outer bottom and the opposite side. All other parts are secondary color.
