Text This folding is a stylized representation of a peacock cartwheeling

1. Take a square sheet of paper, hold it in a diamond position.

2. Fold in a valley from right to left along the vertical diagonal, bringing the middle right vertex to the middle left vertex.
We have a triangular shape with a long vertical hinge side on the right.

3. Fold the lower left edge of the front flap into a valley using an oblique fold from left to right on the vertical hinge edge. Mark the fold well.
The front flap is now a triangular flap whose lower left side is an oblique hinge fold which links it to the rest of the fold. The right, vertical side is free.

4. Fold the lower right edge of the front flap using an oblique fold from right to left into the valley on the left hinge edge. Mark the fold well.
We now have a complex form:
o at the back, we have a simple triangular shape, the right edge of which is a vertical hinge edge.
o the hinge edge makes the connection with a triangular shape which is a sort of fan with three increasingly smaller triangular flaps. The left edge of the fan is made up of an oblique hinge edge on which the left edge of the front triangular flap arrives. The front triangular flap is linked to the middle flap by a hinge fold which runs on the bisector of the lower tip of the triangular shape.


5. Fold the lower left edge of the upper triangular shape on the vertical hinge edge using an oblique fold from left to right. Mark the fold, then unfold.
The valley fold follows the hinge fold that runs down the middle of the upper triangular shape.

6. Flip the fold from right to left. Repeat folds 3 to 5 on the front flap, reversing the directions.

7. Fold the lower right edge of the front flap into a valley using an oblique fold from right to left on the left vertical hinge edge. Mark the fold well.

8. Fold the lower left edge of the front flap into a valley using an oblique fold from left to right on the right hinge edge. Mark the fold well.

9. Fold the lower left edge of the upper triangular shape on the vertical hinge edge using an oblique fold from left to right. Mark the fold, then unfold.

Making of the body, neck and head

10. By rotating 180¡ around the left vertical hinge edge, bring the rear flap onto the front flap.
You get a triangular shape with a vertical hinge edge on the left and a tapering point towards the bottom. This triangular shape is made up of two flaps, each being a sort of three-pronged fan.

11. Valley fold the lower right hinge edge of the front flap from right to left onto the vertical hinge edge, using an existing fold. You must let the flaps of the fan come towards the outside.
The front flap is now a 4-flap fan.

12. Flip the fold from right to left.

13. Valley fold the lower left hinge edge of the front flap from left to right onto the vertical hinge edge, using an existing fold. You must let the flaps of the fan come towards the outside.
We now have a very elongated triangular shape, pointed point downwards, carrying two oblique four-pronged fans.

14. Open the folding by rotating the front flap 90¡ from left to right around the vertical hinge edge.
We now have a diamond shape with a very tapered point at the bottom (this will be the neck and the head) and a more obtuse point at the top (this will be the top of the bird's tail). This diamond shape hides at the back two oblique fans with three flaps each, arranged on either side of the vertical axis.

15. Create a valley fold by bringing the lower point of the diamond on the vertical axis from the bottom to the top. Mark the fold well.
There is no reference point. The fold, triangular in shape, should make it possible to constitute the body of the bird, its neck and its head. One way to carry out this fold is to bring the lower point onto the upper point, without marking the fold, then to lower the point that has just been folded along the vertical axis to the desired position. The bottom of the fold must be horizontal.

16. Fold the upper tip of the front triangular flap onto the vertical axis using a valley fold from top to bottom. Mark the fold well.
There is no reference point. A fold of the order of a centimeter is generally sufficient.

17. Close the fold with a valley fold from left to right resting on the central axis.
We obtain a roughly triangular shape, comprising at the top a structure based on oblique fans (the future tail of the bird) and at the bottom an elongated point coming from the shape carrying the fans with a slight offset. The folding is very thick at the level of the detachment.

18. Take the fold between the thumb and index finger of the right hand above the thickness located at the level of the recess.

19. Using a rocking movement from right to left and from bottom to top, bring the lower tip horizontal.
Two new folds at 45¡ are formed, which appear at the base of the old strike-slip which disappears. We have just performed a pivot fold. The result is a structure with a very tapered, horizontal point on the left and, on the right, a vertical structure with the fans.

20. Using a 45¡ valley fold from bottom to top, bring the lower edge of the left tip so that it is parallel to the vertical left edge of the fan shape. Mark the fold well. Unfold.
There is no benchmark. The distance chosen will form the length of the body.

21. Using the previous fold, perform an exterior reverse fold.
You will need to slightly open the bottom of the fold to carry out this operation. Now the neck is erect.

22. Form the head by performing an outward reverse fold to the left at the top of the neck.
There is no reference point, it all depends on the proportions you want to give. A simple way to make this fold is to break the neck by blocking the break with your thumb and opening the neck while pulling the top towards you.

Shape the tail
The structure which will form the tail looks like a kind of fan which carries, on the left vertically, a free edge hiding three hinged edges then again a free edge. On the right, there are four hinged edges slightly oblique to the right. Shaping the wheel will essentially consist of reversing the left hinged edges.

23. Fold the free part of the front flap of the structure into a valley from left to right, pulling the upper left vertex down as far as possible. Mark the fold well.
We create a triangular flap which extends to the right of the initial shape. The upper left side of this triangle is a hinge fold.

24. Reverse the left vertical front hinge fold, resting on the upper left hinge edge of the upper triangular flap. Mark the fold well.
To do this, simply extend the triangle bordered by the hinge fold to be reversed. We fold in a mountain direction along the hinge edge which serves as a guide, we gently reverse the hinge fold and we accompany the formation of a new mountain fold which passes through the upper and lower vertices of the extending triangle. This new fold is aligned with the left hinge edge of the front triangle.

25. Reverse the long left vertical front hinge fold, resting on the upper left hinge edge of the upper triangular flap. Mark the fold well.
We use exactly the same technique as before. This new fold is aligned with the left hinge edge of the front triangle.

26. Reverse the left vertical front hinge fold, resting on the upper left hinge edge of the upper triangular flap. Mark the fold well.
We use exactly the same technique as before. This new fold is aligned with the left hinge edge of the front triangle.

27. Flip the fold from right to left.

28. Fold the free part of the front flap of the structure into a valley from right to left, pulling the upper right vertex down as far as possible. Mark the fold well.
The original structure is transformed into an oblique fan thrown backwards. For the moment, it is 2D, the elements of the tail being folded on themselves.

29. Shape the tail by opening the fan perpendicular to the plane formed by the neck and the head.
And here is a peacock very proud of himself, who cartwheels to attract his beautiful one. If you use two-color paper, the wheel seen from the front will not be the same color as the body. Very pretty !
