Text | This folding is very elegant and makes a lovely gift that is always very appreciated.
1. Start with a bird base. Place it with the two sharp points down. 2. Form a valley fold by bringing the lower right edge of the front flap from the right lower point to the midline from right to left. 3. Form a valley fold by bringing the lower left edge of the front flap from left to right to the center line. 4. Flip the fold from right to left. 5. Apply the treatment of step 2 and step 3 to the two front flaps of the left and right lower points. We now have two very sharp, very thick points at the bottom of the fold. 6. Slide your left index finger inside the bottom left tip, at the height of the left vertex of the left triangle of the shape. To do this, open the tip and place it almost flat. 7. With your thumb, raise the tip so as to turn it inside itself as high as possible. There is no real reference as to the final position of the inverted point. If it is to be the tail, then it should be almost horizontal, slightly offset upwards. 8. Slide your right index finger inside the bottom right point, at the height of the right vertex of the right triangle of the shape. To do this, open the tip and place it almost flat. 9. With your thumb, raise the tip so as to turn it inside itself as high as possible. There is no real reference as to the final position of the inverted point. If it must be the head, then it should be almost at 45¡. 10. Along the point that has just been inverted, locate a point that will allow you to invert the point again inside, downwards, so that the end goes down slightly. There is no real reference, it is a problem of proportion to constitute the head. 11. Mark all folds well. To the left we have a sharp point which is the tail of the bird, to the right a broken point to make the neck and beak of the bird and in the middle two free flaps. 12. Turn the fold perpendicular to you. 13. Grasp the left flap between the thumb and index finger of the left hand and the right flap between the thumb and index finger of the right hand. Slide your thumbs as far down as possible inside the fold. In doing so, start bringing the flaps horizontal, trying to maintain a nice curvature on each side. Between the two thumbs is a triangular tip. 14. Once both thumbs are in the locked position, pull gently by moving both thumbs horizontally apart from each other. The triangular point deforms into a sort of dome which will be the back of the bird. Don't pull too hard! 15. Shape the wings. Folding is complete. This is the crane, a sacred bird in Japan, symbol of good health and longevity. Folding 1000 cranes is very symbolic, and a test of patience! |
