Tribute to Saburo Kase Sensei
Jaflapse folder, blind from the age of 12, Saburo Kase has traveled the whole world to teach origami to the blind. He left several articles which explain his teaching method. The following sentence is from him: 'Folding is always a cause of pleasure and interest for me. When I finish a job, the hope I had at the beginning turns into great joy.' He is also the creator of models known throughout the world, thanks to his book 'Omoshiroi Hodo Yoku Oreru Origami Bukku'. I had the honor of meeting him in Paris in July 2005, with his faithful accompanist Eiji Tajima. I spoke to him about the Aveuglami project as it presented itself at the time. After listening to me attentively (while folding a tiny sheet of paper...), he encouraged me to continue and gave me some ideas to complete the project. I then offered him a vase corresponding to the diagrams on pages 140 and 141 of his book. This vase bore, inscribed in Braille, 'Projet Aveuglami', 'Michel Lucas' and a list of first names 'Martine Gisle Hilaire Jeanne Maryse Roger Monique Nelly'. These people, blind or partially sighted, folded this vase in May 2005. To thank me, he gave me photos of some of his foldings (sumotori) and a pack of 1,000 two-color origami sheets, which I still use today. It is true that he was returning to Japan and that it was a weighty gift. I must say that we had corresponded some time before, and that he had sent me a copy of his book, which was then unobtainable. Saburo Kase died on April 11, 2008. This site dedicated to the Aveuglami project is dedicated to him. |
