The Aveuglami project: teaching origami to blind or visually impaired people
The art of folding paper (origami) is an activity that is almost a thousand years old. Transforming a simple sheet of paper into a flower, into an animal, into a decorative object, is almost magical, and certainly captivating. Many master folders have invented and continue to invent models whose difficulty ranges from almost nothing to very complex. Even if origami enthusiasts are not very numerous in France, recent publications show that the general public is starting to be affected. Is this activity accessible to visually impaired people? The major obstacle is that the dissemination of creations today relies on an essentially visual presentation. The sequence of folds to be carried out is described using a series of codified diagrams, which allow you to understand at a glance the different steps to be carried out. Dozens of books exist, at all levels, but which are strictly inaccessible to the blind and visually impaired. The Aveuglami project (Blind people and origami) aims to establish methods of teaching origami for the blind and visually impaired. We are taking a long-term approach, which aims to acquire basic folding techniques, an understanding of the phenomena involved, mastery of paper and a certain autonomy. Choosing the models, finding the right folding sequences, integrating as many tactile cues as possible, setting up an educational progression, all this is only part of the project. One of the difficulties is to provide the means to fold between two course sessions. Although it is possible to memorize a series of folds, an easily consultable memory aid is very useful. It was therefore necessary to think about ways to provide this help. The heart of the system is the existence of a text base (the scripts) describing the different stages of folding models. These texts are intended to replace the diagrams. Their production requires a lot of effort, involves a very precise choice of vocabulary and the use of particular expressions that are found systematically. Thus, we construct a technical framework which makes it relatively easy to find what has been studied previously during the course sessions. Experience shows that blind people are waiting for such texts, which allow them to do and redo this or that folding in total autonomy. This is why the creation of a library of texts (scripts) and the mastery of the means of production of different media as well as their distribution are among the major objectives of the Aveuglami project. The existence of a computer representation of these texts allows the automatic production of documents that can have various forms: paper, braille, audio. Everyone interested in origami will find media adapted to their disability. |
