The different supports for use by the visually impaired

A wide variety of media can be used to make folding scripts available to visually impaired people.

We can quote:

- the production of paper output:
o accompanying documents for the teacher, to help prepare lessons.
o large character printing, support for a visually impaired person.
o document intended to be scanned, as input to a speaking machine,
o printing in Braille on a specialized printer from the transformation of text files using specialized software (Winbraille, Duxburry, etc.).

- for computer owners:
o output on a line of dynamic Braille characters, from text or HTML files.
o speech synthesis using text synthesizers (for example, in English, English: Text To Speech software),
o voice synthesis again, by combining the production of an HMTL/XML type file for navigation and the possibilities of the JAWS system, which allows the content of a screen page to be read orally. This is how the Audiogamis were born.

- the production of sound documents in Daisy format:
o accompanying documents to facilitate registration,
o management of mp3 files alone, or of the entire Daisy format, to produce audio books. This is the foundation of «Daisygami».
o output both on CD and on any other digital media, such as SD cards.
o you must have a means of reading documents in Daisy format: Victor type devices, Plextalk, computer reading program, etc.

- other supports
o I did some tests on audio cassettes. These turned out to be unusable due to the numerous visual maneuvers required by a tape recorder (positioning on a specific location on the cassette)
o we must cite the book written by E. van der Ploeg, H. Jongsma, «Sehen mit den Händen». It consists of thermoformed pages, representing the proposed folding diagrams. The figures were made with #7 sandpaper so that they could be easily recognized by touch. In practice, the book is very difficult to use and produce, and this process has been abandoned.

All these supports have their qualities and their faults, but the diversity of the target audience leads to planning their use by this or that category of folders. We must therefore be able to produce these different supports. The automatic processing by a computer of any script is therefore to be sought. The Aveuglami software allows us to process all of these media.
